Tinnitus Ear Pain
Intense ear pain, muffled hearing, ringing, please help?
I’m not sure what I did, but for the past two days I’ve had rather sharp pain in my left ear. There seems to be a blockage because everything is muffled in that ear and there is a tinnitus like ringing. It’s even radiated down the side of my jaw, limiting how much I can move my mouth.
Is there anything I can do? Do I have to go to the hospital?

Given that it’s radiated down to your jaw, you have an ear infection. These are the bane of my life, I get them several times a year. You need to get an antibiotic quickly, to deal with it. See your doctor as soon as you can. If it’s an appointment system, tell the receptionist that you have severe earache and can’t eat or sleep – hopefully you’ll be seen quicker then.
Until you can get to the doctor there are a couple of things you can try to help the pain. Take some general pain killers. Then fill a clean sock half full of dry, uncooked rice. tie the end of the sock, and heat it in the microwave until its comfortably warm. hold it against your jaw and ear. If that doesn’t help at all, you can try this (believe me, it works I have had to do this several times). dip a piece of cotton wool into some mouth wash and gently hold it at the entry to your ear canal. As mouthwash is anti-bacterial, it DOES help. It won’t do any damage to your ear.
